How to export a GPX from AllTrails

· 1 min read

AllTrails has a huge database of hiking trails around the world, from the Tatras to the Alps. You can export a trail or your own recording as a GPX file through the Export map file option.

Step by step

  1. Open alltrails.com and log in.
  2. Find the trail, for example Palenica Białczańska to Morskie Oko from the video, or open your own recording under My activities.
  3. Next to the Save and Share buttons, click the three dots.
  4. Choose Export map file.
  5. Keep GPX Track as the file format and click Export.
Exporting a GPX from AllTrails: the three dots next to Share, Export map file, GPX Track, then Export.

The file ends in .gpx and you can upload it on the create page right away.

Things to watch out for

The export is locked

For some trails and accounts, AllTrails only allows map downloads with an AllTrails Plus subscription. If the export doesn't work for you, you have two options: find the same route in another app such as Komoot, or pick a similar route from the popular routes on our create page.

GPX Track, not GPX Route

If AllTrails offers several formats, choose GPX Track. It holds every point of the route, so the relief follows the path exactly. The Route format is often simplified to a handful of points.

Tip: An AllTrails trail is the same for everyone who walked it, which makes it a good choice for a gift when you don't have your friend's own recording. Engrave their name and the date of the hike on the base.
